One of my passions is Formula One Motor racing. I’ve been a fan since 1990, and seen many great drivers come and go. If you ever get the opportunity to attend a race, the speed of these cars is a sight to behold! This year I was lucky enough to attend the United States Grand Prix in Austin Texas. This being my third time, it never gets boring! With speeds of 200mph down the straights, as a photographer, this is quite the challenge. This year my focus was on current world champion, British racing driver Lewis Hamilton…..he’s no slow poke! The problem with photographing Formula One or any other racing event, is the chainmail fencing blocking your view & making for a crap image. You may find the odd hole here and their to peak through, but that’s very limited. So my other trick is dragging the shutter (using a slow shutter speed) which sounds insane due to the shear speed of these cars, but when you nail it, you can get a very satisfying result, at least in my eyes! The following images are two of my favorites from this year!
Lewis Hamilton #44 – Mercedes AMG (And yes he won)
Valtteri Bottas #77 – Mercedes AMG
Both of these images were shot @ 1/15sec. One with a 400mm lens, the second on a 35mm lens.
